Today it was brought to my attention that there is a chicken tender shortage. I was asked if any of the Fooblie families with picky eaters are freaking out. Are you freaking out? If you do have a picky eater and are worried about a chicken tender shortage, remain calm! Here we round up the top tips from our nutrition experts and moms of picky eaters about how to handle this news of a chicken tender shortage. Remember, this pandemic has thrown at us harder stuff than this. You’ve got this!

If this chicken tender shortage hits close to home, try this

Chicken nuggets are great! They are a crowd pleaser that goes from freezer to table in minutes. But, chicken tenders are not a unicorn! There are lots of options for you in the same aisle of the grocery store if you can’t find chicken tenders. For example, you can try…

  • Tater tots
  • Broccoli or veggie bites
  • Fish nuggets
  • Plant-based nuggets
  • Veggie fries
  • Egg bites or frittatas

One brand called out by a couple Fooblie RDs is Dr Praegers.  They have lots of veggie-based nuggets that are in fun shapes and they’re tasty!

What if your kid can tell?

It’s more likely that your little one will not notice the difference if you replace a chicken nugget with a fish nugget. That said, some extremely picky eaters will. For those kids, try to find a substitute that has a similar shape and texture. You can also try food chaining.

If you have time, you can fire up the kitchen.

If you can’t buy chicken nuggets due to the chicken tender shortage, how bout make them? This may not be ideal. I know from personal experience, when I buy chicken tenders it is because I need something REAL QUICK to serve for dinner. If you have the time, try to make chicken tenders or pork tenders.

Some other evidence-based tips…

  • Whatever you do, don’t let your kid see you freak out. Remain calm!
  • Serve the new food with a smile.

Boost your success with a new food by making it fun…

  • Look for fun shapes and cutouts
  • Serve the food with a dip like plain yogurt, ranch dressing, marinara sauce

Take advantage of the chicken tender shortage

Whatever happens, chicken nuggets will return! This chicken tender shortage is not here to stay. See this as a good excuse to try something new. You’ve got this!
